Although she was raised by working-class parents in Normandy, Céleste was propelled into the middle class by her education. She has therefore never known what it is to be poor in Paris, and her places are inevitably very different to Valérie's. Pictured here are the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, where Céleste lived amid the sandstone gloat of the Sorbonne after first graduating, as well as the affluent 16th arrondissement, where Céleste's success as an architect ultimately took her.

  • "It was my third or fourth apartment after graduating, a walk-up in the Saint-Germain neighborhood. Sorbonne students drifting around, gloatingly dowdy, thinking their familiarity wirh Foucault still meant something in this emoji age."
